PRESS STATEMENT

ANTONY J. BLINKEN, SECRETARY OF STATE

APRIL 21, 2022

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his premeditated, unprovoked, unjustified and brutal war against Ukraine, the relentless bombardment of Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure by Russian forces has created one of the most dynamic humanitarian crises since decades. This is a tragic and catastrophic war of choice made entirely by Russia, and the United States, its allies and partners will stand with the people of Ukraine in their just cause – the defense of their country and their democracy. Together, we continue to support Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity and to strengthen Ukraine’s position on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.

Today, as Russia begins its new offensive in eastern Ukraine, I authorized, under a delegation from the President, a withdrawal to provide additional immediate military assistance to Ukraine, assessed $800 million worth of weapons and equipment from the US Department of Defense Inventories. The authorization, which builds on last week’s $800 million package, is the eighth withdrawal of weapons, equipment and supplies from the Defense Ministry’s stockpiles for Ukraine since August 2021.

We will continue to provide Ukraine with the weapons that its forces use effectively in the field to defend themselves. These efforts, combined with direct U.S. humanitarian and financial support to Ukraine, support the documentation of evidence of Russia’s war crimes against Ukrainian civilians, and continued efforts to increase pressure on the crumbling economy. of Putin will contribute to weakening the position of the Russian government and further isolating it from the world until Russia ends its unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine.

For nearly eight weeks, Russia has waged its savage assault on Ukraine, its sovereignty, independence, freedom and people. From Bucha to Kramatorsk, from Kharkiv to Mariupol, we have seen Russia’s brutalities and atrocities exposed to the world. And yet, Ukrainian winter turned into Ukrainian spring. The Ukrainian people will prevail.
