A base map is a rendering of multiple “layers” of data – such as streets, buildings, rivers, green spaces – as they appear when put together in a single image.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Municipality, highlighted the initiative during his presentation, where he learned about the center’s main projects and operations for 2022. The initiative focused on the development of a database and a dictionary of assets, which would be updated by aerial photographs as well as internally at the center, by field surveys for the assets of strategic partners.

The update process is in line with Dubai Municipality’s goal of providing partners with services and geospatial maps using the latest technologies. This is in line with the best-approved international standards and guidelines from Dubai’s wise management, the municipality said. DM facilitated the systematic collection and compilation of a geospatial database, which will be updated regularly.

The project included updated data for the Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of Dubai, as well as updated geospatial data and green areas collected using DTM technology. geospatial artificial intelligence (AI).

In addition, the GIS Center now has the first ‘PluraView’ unit in Dubai, where staff members have been trained to take advantage of technology to build three-dimensional models from aerial imagery, based on corrected measurements. for quality control and data extraction.

Al Hajri said, “The Municipality, through its GIS Center, is keen to provide geospatial services and maps to partners using the most advanced technologies, in accordance with internationally accepted standard practices and guidance from wise leaders. . We truly recognize the importance of geospatial projects, operations and initiatives, including the base map project update process, as it plays a crucial role in the planning and development of infrastructure in the emirate.

The project, which uses aerial photography and the PluraView 3D three-dimensional stereo device, to cover all of Dubai with an accuracy of 10-15cm, is considered one of the center’s most important projects. “The efforts of the municipality are certain to improve the emirate’s geospatial projects and improve the database of assets across the region,” he added.
