Jennifer Lester, Director of the General Services and Facilities Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will retire on October 31 after a 25-year career at the Fund, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced today.

“Jennifer has been an inspirational leader at the Fund, a mentor to many and highly respected by all,” Ms. Georgieva said. “She left a lasting mark on everyone who had the opportunity to work with her. We have all come to know Jennifer for her sound judgement, unwavering composure and grace under pressure as she led the Fund during the destabilizing time of the COVID-19 health crisis as head of the management team. crisis of the Fund.

“Recognizing that our experiences during the pandemic presented an opportunity to transform the way we work as an organization, Jennifer led a cross-departmental effort that developed our new hybrid working model, which will have a profound effect on our continued ability to serving members, improving work-life balance, attracting new talent and reducing our carbon footprint,” Ms. Georgieva said. “His constant attention to the needs and safety of staff, and careful planning in consultation with our health services, has enabled a successful return to headquarters and our field offices. I know that I speak on behalf of my management team and the Board in expressing my deep gratitude for managing Jennifer during one of the most difficult times in our history and for making the Fund a more modern institution. .

Ms. Lester, a Jamaican national, joined the Fund as Counsel in the Legal Department in 1997, rising to senior positions, including her last position in that department as Deputy General Counsel in charge of the administrative law. She has been a trusted advisor to the human resources department, the management team and the board of directors on the most sensitive legal issues concerning the administration of the institution. She also led a number of institution-wide initiatives and innovations, including the establishment of the Ombudsperson Office, reforms to the staff employment framework and institutional review process, and the orderly promulgation of rules through the Staff Manual. She was appointed Director of Corporate Services and Facilities in 2020, after serving as its Deputy Director for four years.

Prior to her career at the Fund, Ms. Lester was a lawyer with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization and practiced corporate law, international trade law and litigation as a partner in private practice. Prior to that, she served in the Jamaican government from 1979 to 1991, first as a Foreign Service Officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Kingston, then as Minister Counselor at the Jamaican Embassy in Washington.

She earned her Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC, and holds a Master of Science in International Relations and a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages ​​from the University of the West Indies.
