Minister pledged to prioritize commercial facilities for fishermen


A simple system must be available for fishermen to obtain capital, financing, marketing and partnership support

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of State Enterprises (SOE), Erick Thohir, has underscored his commitment to prioritizing the provision of business facilities to improve the welfare of Indonesian fishermen.

The minister, in a statement here on Sunday, noted that priority facilities would include affordable and adequate fuel supply as well as business funding.

Thohir will ensure that fuel demand in fishing center areas is properly met.

“I found that 60 to 70 percent of fishermen’s operational costs are used to purchase fuel,” he noted.

Therefore, it is necessary to provide gas stations or refueling services in each fishing center, the minister stressed.

The minister expressed his belief that fishers have a central role to play in Indonesia’s future development to improve the country’s economy and food sovereignty.

Therefore, he stressed that the government remains committed to supporting the establishment of an advanced commercial fisheries ecosystem, as he believes that in the future, the sea will become the main source of food.

“This requires traditional Indonesian fishermen to play a role. Therefore, their business ecosystem needs to be improved, including access to fuel, financial provision, as well as the attempt to market,” he stressed.

Further, speaking on the financing, Thohir said the Association of Public Banks (Himbara) – comprising PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), PT Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN), as well as PT Bank Mandiri — had provided financing facilities and low-interest commercial loans to fishermen.

Thohir expects the finance facility can be utilized optimally by fishermen, especially in Muncar sub-district, Banyuwangi district, which is one of the fishing hubs in East Java province. .

He noted that to develop the area as a center of fishing in the province, the ecosystem of fishing enterprises in Muncar sub-district must encourage traditional fishermen to improve.

“A simple program must be available for fishermen to obtain capital, financing, marketing and partnership support,” he added.
