Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. expressed the gratitude of the government of the Philippines and the people of the Philippines to the Republic of Korea (ROK) for its emergency assistance to the victims of Typhoon âOdetteâ (international name: Rai).
During a courtesy visit to Secretary Locsin on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Kim In-chul personally pledged $ 2 million in cash donations from the Korean government as aid to the Odette suite.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea also provided emergency in-kind assistance worth $ 50,000 in the form of 2,500 units of 25-kilogram bags or 62.5 tonnes of rice to the Ministry of Protection. Social and Development (DSWD).
The Philippines and the Republic of Korea worked together to strengthen governance and infrastructure for disaster risk management, improve disaster preparedness for effective response-focused interventions in the areas of recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
Republic of Korea has so far donated $ 218.6 million in emergency humanitarian assistance in response to typhoons, floods, earthquakes, as well as the Covid pandemic -19.
For the pandemic alone, the Republic of Korea’s assistance to the Philippines in 2020 and 2021 amounted to $ 210.7 million, including Korea’s donation of 539,430 doses of AstraZeneca that were delivered to Philippines on November 30, 2021.
This year, the Philippines and the Republic of Korea celebrated a milestone in development cooperation, marking 30 years since the establishment of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the Philippines in 1991, and 10 years since the opening from the Korea Export-Import Bank (KEXIM) in the Philippines in 2011.
